Author Biography

Elisabeth von Samsonow, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

Elisabeth von Samsonow, artist and philosopher, is Professor of Philosophical and Historical Anthropology at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and Visiting Professor at the Bauhaus University Wei­mar (2012-2013). She is involved in various international activities both as an artist and curator. Her teaching and research focus on collective memory, the relationship between art and religion, fe­male identification, sacral and profane androgyny, and the disso­lution of the modern self. Her work as an artist is concerned with the systematic and symbolic place of sculpture in the framework of contemporary multimedia. She is the author of, most recently, (as editor) Epidemic Subjects – Radical Ontology (diaphanes, Ber­lin and Chicago University Press, 2017) and Anti-Electra (Minne­sota University Press, 2019). Recent artistic projects include: Les Ballets Russes present ANTI-ELECTRA (Moscow, 2017), Laborato­ry of the Exo/Endo Corpus (short film, 2017), Transplants (Krems, 2016), HORSE’S GLORY (Vienna, 2015), Hippo Hypno Schizo Hoch Zeit (performance, Art Week Vienna, 2011). von Samsonow is also translator and editor of several German editions of Giordano Bru­no. Elisabeth von Samsonow, Künstlerin und Philosophin, ist Profes­sorin für Philosophische und Historische Anthropologie an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien und Gastprofessorin an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (2012-2013). Sie ist an verschie­denen internationalen Aktivitäten sowohl als Künstlerin als auch als Kuratorin beteiligt. Ihre Lehre und Forschung konzentriert sich auf das kollektive Gedächtnis, die Beziehung zwischen Kunst und Religion, die Identifikation von Frauen, sakrale und profane Androgynie und die Auflösung des modernen Selbst. Ihre künst­lerische Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem systematischen und symbolischen Ort der Skulptur im Rahmen zeitgenössischer Mul­timedia. Sie ist Autorin von (als Herausgeberin) Epidemic Subjects - Radical Ontology (Diaphanes, Berlin and Chicago University Press, 2017) und Anti-Electra (Minnesota University Press, 2019). Zu den jüngsten künstlerischen Projekten gehören: Les Ballets Russes Presents ANTI-ELECTRA (Moskau, 2017), Laboratory of the Exo/Endo Corpus (Kurzfilm, 2017), Transplants (Krems, 2016), HORSE’S GLORY (Wien, 2015), Hippo Hypno Schizo Hoch Zeit (Performance, Kunstwoche Wien, 2011). von Samsonow ist außerdem Überset­zer und Herausgeber mehrerer deutscher Ausgaben von Giordano Bruno.
